Group work (Little princes: Chapter I)

<Little Prices – Description/Analysis of Chapter I> 600/400words
Group I: Donghyuk Lim, Abdulaziz Alduaijy, Rakan Alharbi, Saif Alsayed, Alzobaur Bugshan

Summary
In Chapter I, Conor Grennan, the author of the book, narrates about his three-month volunteering experience at an orphanage in Nepal. It is the first but crucial step to allude to what he will do later on other chapters. Actually, the initial reasons that he decided to go to Nepal are to prove to others like his family and friends that his life is extraordinary. He worked for 8 years in Prague, but he was bored with his life and quit his job. He planned to travel around the world for a year and he thought volunteering in Nepal as a first destination would look better and decrease the blames toward him about his plan. However, the situations of Nepal that was in a civil war were worse that he expected as well as some living conditions like unsanitary toilets. He had to watch a presentation for the volunteer program, but he could not concentrate because it was boring. After the orientation, he visited a native family in a village, and he felt cultural differences like food, eating style, religion, and of course language that he never experienced before. Then, he realized that he was in different place. For example, ‘Dall bhat’ is the traditional Nepalese food eaten by 90 percent of the people, twice a day. He could not eat this food because it was too spicy for him. After the orientation, he was assigned to Godawari, which is the Little Princes Children’s Home. At ‘the blue metal gate’ that led into the Little Princes Children’s Home, he suddenly realized how he did not want to walk through that gate. He just wanted to tell others that he volunteered at an orphanage. At first, he did not know how to begin volunteering in the orphanage, but he received a warm welcome from the children. The orphanage, established by Sandra, has four other volunteers; Jenny, Chris, Farid and Sandra, and there are eighteen children including 16 boys and 2 girls. He introduced himself to the children as Conor, but he felt the language difference because children would pronounce his name as ‘Krondor’. After the introduction, they had a dinner, and then he recognized one new eating habit, which is called ‘juto’. In Nepali culture, once a person touches his food, it is considered unclean and cannot be shared with other people. He felt guilty about dumping food in his life. After he got into the facility, he bonded well with the children by playing some games including a new game, which is named ‘carrom.’ He also had to teach science even though he had no experience. The children were surprised about the author’s culture when they found out that he ate beef. However, one day, a strange person whose name is ‘Golkka’ came to the orphanage, and he never sees him. Sandra said that he is a person who took the children from their villages, and a child trafficker. The author noticed that some of them are not orphans but victims of human trafficking, and there was a secret behind the children’s happiness and pureness. As well, he reminded again that Nepal is in the civil war through Sandra’s experience captured by Nepali soldiers. Two days before he leaves after three-month volunteering, many children at an orphanage asked to him that he would come back or not. He was not sure because there is nothing to do in here. However, at the same time, he felt desperate sadness and understood this kind of emotions his mother has sometimes felt when he returned to Prague. He went to back to children’s room, and then surely said to them. “I’ll come back in one year”.

Analysis
Through the paper, I would like to analysis about the ideas how the author promoted his thought in chapter I.
First, at the beginning in the chapter I, the author describes about his personal backgrounds and the reasons that he decides to go to Nepal. It is very crucial part in the book because his initial thought to go to Nepal and later thought to leave to Nepal is completely different, and it is shown how his changed recognitions impact his life and eighteen children’s life at an orphanage.
Second, in the chapter I, the author represents about Nepali situation that is a developing country in a civil war like tight security, unsanitary toilets, lack of infrastructure, and poor living conditions. Through description of those, the author seems to want people who live in better conditions to think and reflect about their life, and then let them change their habit of waste. Even sometimes the author feels guilty about his past life style habits like dumping food and overuse of plastic bags. As well, although their living condition is not good, the children’s do not feel any discomfort. They look happier than other people. The author wants to say about materialism does not equal to happiness. Another reason is that it might be the reason to request the help to them.
Third, the author introduces about Nepali cultures that is distinguished from American culture like some eating habits like ‘juto’, some games like ‘carrom’, some food like ‘dall baht’ and so on. Every country has their own culture and tradition, and the author wants to show their different cultures that he experience.
Last, the author talks about the main theme of the book; ‘the child trafficking.’ It is very serious problem that is happening in Nepal. The author just says about the guy who is a trafficker and the situation why the children came to the orphanage in chapter I, but it is enough description about how serious it is. The child traffickers tell a lie to poor parents for their children’s safety, and then take and use it as cheap labors. Without a doubt, the author wants to tell and inform this serious problem to other people around the world, and needs to solve them with international support.

Comparing

“Little Princes” is a story of 29 years old Conor Grennan, who unexpectedly to himself committed his life to the resilient Nepali orphans. In the proposed assignment I would try to contrast two rather different personalities of the changed hero.
Pages 6-7 from the introductory part of the text present hero's reflections and thoughts upon his hectic and radical decision to spend the next few years volunteering in some Third World Orphanage. It appeared to Connor to be a sign of selflessness, though we observe his hesitations, reluctance and lack of passion towards the trip. Looking through the volunteer brochure, he was dreaming on “petting baby koalas in some Australian coastal paradise” rather than on

The next pages proposed for comparison (52-55), develop fairly different image of Grennan: what initially began for him as a footloose adventure appeared to became a truly life-changing and crucial experience of sting volunteer work at the orphanage Little Princes in war-torn country of Nepal. There was a scene with Anish described, when Connor came to say the last good-bye for his little brothers. At this stage of his life, we seem him with another feelings and thoughts in mind: he is completely broke down and even crying due to the need to leave Godawari to complete his planned around the globe voyage. As he recalls it, “children had become a constant presence, little spinning tops that spattered joy on everyone they bumped into”. Realizing that his unforgettable Nepali experience is obviously not likely repeated in the future, Connor is sincerely desperate with his promise to get back in a year. Despite these disappointing and unconvincing words, the reader see a clear hope for “little princes” to see their Brother Connor once again.

The thesis statement in an essay is a sentence that clearly identifies the purpose of the paper or previews its main ideas. Also the thesis statement should be covering the whole main idea.

The third part is conclusion; the conclusion is the final part of paper. Also, Conclusions are often the hardest part of an essay to write, and a lot of writers feel that they have nothing left to say after having written the paper. Book Summary: Little Princes

Book Summary: Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal by Connor Grennan

Little Princes’ is a true story based on Connors real life experiences in Nepal. His visit to the war-torn country would be his first destination in a year-long journey around the world. Bored with his job, Connor sets off on the journey seeking to for adventure by volunteering to help people in need. Connor’s experiences in Nepal turn out to be life-changing for him. In Nepal Connor is scheduled to contribute his time as a volunteer at the Little Princes Orphanage. All the children in the orphanage are supposedly orphans but as Connor soon discovers, most of them are in fact not orphans. These children actually have families. The children in the orphanage whose parents are alive were taken away from their families by child traffickers who claimed that they would provide protection for the children. Conner is touched by the plight of these children. He commits to reunite the children with their families. This is not going to be an easy task and it places the life of Connor in grave danger.

Connor could never have planned his Nepal experience as it turns out to be. Never in his wildest imaginations did Connor think that volunteering could be so life-changing. Connor’s three months of volunteering have a significant effect on his life. One can even see the transformation that Connor goes through from reading the book. In the beginning of the book, Connor comes out as an arrogant person. This however changes with time as Connor becomes more attached to and fond of the children. He becomes so attached and committed to the children that he is very reluctant to leave them. Had he not booked a ticket to Thailand earlier on, Connor would have preferred to stay with the children. Leaving the children is a quite challenging for Connor and his promise to return to Nepal in a year’s time gives both the children and himself a glimmer of hope.

As he promised, Connor returns to Nepal to volunteer again. He learns that mothers of the children have shown up looking for their children. Most of the children believed that their parents were dead and were pleasantly surprised to be reunited with their parents. Connor is quite pleased to learn that his efforts have borne fruit and feels very responsible.

Connor returns to New Jersey but has a difficult time readjusting to life in the big cities. His heart is still attached to the children and he wants to do something more significant for them. Receiving sad news about one of the children encourages Connor even more in his quest to do something significant for the children. Connor starts a non-profit organization called Next Generation Nepal. The organization’s mission is to reunite children in Nepal who have been separated by traffickers from their families.

Connor’s book highlights the difficult lives that children and their families face in Nepal at the hands of child traffickers. The book also highlights the efforts of volunteers such as Connor aimed at reuniting children with their families. The book has great lessons about love, respect, humility and service for humanity.

Who am I ?

A lot of people ask me, who I am, I am a hardworking student who has a goal to achieve. My name is Saif Alsayed. I’m from Medina which is one of huge city in Saudi Arabia. My ambition is to become an English teacher. This was my goal since I was a kid. The motivation that I think I want to be an English teacher is extremely significant because English language has become the first language around the world. I usually work hard when it comes to reaching my goal so when I get to the end result I can have the best of life.

I was an independent student, and I always study all of my subjects by myself. I don’t ask my parents to help me in my subjects. However, I always got excellent grades at school. In addition, if I don’t understand something in my subjects I head to my instructor directly. I have been one of the best students in elementary school and high school and the competent authority education selected me to a private school as a gifted. I was very happy at that moment and it was special happen for me. So maybe I do well with mental stuffs more than physical things. Moreover, I have been using computer before 12 years and I had built web site for Asian drama when I was 15 years old and it was had about 200 thousand members. Finally, I think that a person is half of who they really are and of his parents.

In my opinion, the people who want to be succeed in our life need to build a basic in the beginning.   Each person has a way about how to learn but I have my own way and I think is the best way for me to learn. You have to depend on yourself to get some experience from others. So I’m learning from the other mistakes to have the best results.
